2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Review

The 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric is a vehicle that’s generating a lot of buzz in the EV world. With its sleek design, impressive range, and user-friendly features, the Kona Electric is setting a new standard for compact SUVs.

Battery Options and Performance

The 2024 Kona Electric offers two battery packs: a 48 kWh and a larger 65 kWh. The 48 kWh version provides:

  • 156 PS of power

  • Accelerates from 0-62 mph in 8.8 seconds

  • Range of 234 miles

On the other hand, the 65 kWh battery pack delivers:

  • 218 PS of power

  • 0-62 mph in 7.8 seconds

  • Range of 319 miles

To maximize range, the 17-inch wheels are recommended, although the standard 19-inch wheels on the Ultimate edition still offer great performance.

Pricing and Editions

The Kona Electric starts at £33,500, with the top-tier Ultimate edition, featuring the larger battery pack, going up to £43,000. The model I tested is the Ultimate edition with the Lux Pack, which includes several premium features. If you're considering leasing, make sure to check the latest deals to get the best value.

Interior and Cargo Space

Despite its compact size, the Kona Electric offers a surprisingly spacious boot. Officially rated at 466 litres, it feels much larger, with ample under-floor storage for essentials like the granny charger. Additionally, there’s a 27-litre frunk (front trunk), adding even more practicality.

Inside the cabin, Hyundai has done a fantastic job. The infotainment display is bright, clear, and easy to use, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The driver information display is equally impressive, providing clear, uncluttered visuals. One standout feature is the blind-spot view, which automatically shows up on the driver display when you signal — a practical feature that’s far from a gimmick.

Comfort and Usability

Hyundai has wisely opted for physical buttons in the Kona Electric, making the controls straightforward and intuitive. However, the display for the air conditioning and fan controls feels a bit outdated, reminiscent of older LCD screens. While this is a minor gripe, it does contrast with the otherwise modern and high-res displays in the car.

Another small issue is the placement of the USB ports, which could have been designed more effectively. But on the plus side, the car includes a wireless charging pad, heated and cooled seats, and a well-laid-out center console with easy access to essential controls.

Driving Experience

On the road, the Kona Electric feels surprisingly light and nimble, despite the heavy battery pack. The steering is responsive, making it easy to manoeuvre in traffic, although it doesn’t offer the engagement you might find in a sportier vehicle. But if you’re considering the Kona Electric, you’re likely more interested in comfort and efficiency than thrilling drives on twisty roads.

The car is packed with safety and driver-assistance features, which can be a bit intrusive at times. However, these can be turned off, although you'll need to do so each time you start the car — something that’s becoming common in modern vehicles.

In a crowded market of compact electric SUVs, the Kona Electric stands out, particularly with its impressive range and thoughtful design.

Efficiency and Practicality

With an efficiency of 4.7 miles per kilowatt-hour, the Kona Electric is highly efficient, especially on city roads. The predicted range is quite accurate, giving you confidence in its reliability for daily commutes.

Final Thoughts

The 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric may not be the most exhilarating car to drive, but it excels in delivering a reliable, comfortable, and practical driving experience. It’s an excellent choice for those who prioritize range, practicality, and ease of use over flashy features or sporty handling.

In a crowded market of compact electric SUVs, the Kona Electric stands out, particularly with its impressive range and thoughtful design. If you’re in the market for a small electric SUV, the Hyundai Kona Electric should be at the top of your list.
