Today, we're diving into the 2023 Subaru Solterra EV — a compelling new entry into the electric vehicle market that's been co-developed by Subaru and Toyota. If you've seen the Toyota bZ4X, this car might look familiar, and for a good reason: the Solterra shares much of its DNA with Toyota’s electric SUV. Subaru, known for its expertise in four-wheel-drive systems and chassis control, brings those strengths to the table, while Toyota handles much of the rest.

Battery and Range

The Subaru Solterra comes equipped with a 71.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering a range of 257 miles on this Touring model. If you opt for the Limited model, Subaru claims you can push that range up to 289 miles. An ambitious goal for the Solterra is that 90% of the battery capacity should still be available after 10 years. This focus on long-lasting battery life could mean that these vehicles might outlast some of their rivals before heading to the scrapyard.

Power and Performance

Under the hood, or rather under the floor (thanks to its EV architecture), the Solterra provides 218 horsepower and 336 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 6.9 seconds, which isn't blistering fast but respectable for an SUV weighing in at around two tons. Additionally, it has a towing capacity of 750 kilograms.

Trims and Features

There are two trim levels available: Touring and Limited. Both trims offer a solid array of features, including 150 kW DC fast charging, a heat pump, a surround-view parking system, and Subaru's X-Mode with hill descent control, enhancing its off-road credentials.

The Touring model, which we're reviewing today, is particularly well-equipped. It comes with 20-inch alloy wheels, wireless phone charging, a leather or faux leather interior, a glass roof, and a premium audio system. Both trims boast a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and have advanced driver assistance features that monitor if you’re paying attention to the road, alerting you if you’re distracted. Thankfully, these can be disabled if you find them more annoying than helpful.

Interior and Comfort

Inside, the Solterra offers a sensible, user-friendly design. The fabric trim is a nice touch, although there's quite a bit of piano black plastic, which tends to attract fingerprints and scratches easily. The materials are generally of high quality and feel well put together, with a robust build that’s typical of Subaru.

The steering wheel is packed with controls, which might be a bit overwhelming at first, but it's comfortable to use. The large infotainment system is a significant upgrade from what you'd typically find in older Subaru or Toyota vehicles. The display offers ample screen space, is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay, and is easy to navigate. The factory system is also intuitive and borrows some visual cues from the Tesla interface, making it an effective and user-friendly setup.

However, the interior isn’t without its quirks. The floor is noticeably high, a design compromise to accommodate the battery pack underneath. This elevated floor can feel a bit unnatural, especially when getting in and out of the car, making it seem like you’re sitting on the vehicle rather than in it. Additionally, the driver information display sits awkwardly between a traditional dashboard and a head-up display, and depending on your steering wheel position, it might get partially obscured.

Practicality

When it comes to cargo space, the Solterra offers 441 litres of boot space in the Touring model, with a bit more room in the Limited model. While the boot shape is practical and there’s additional storage space for charging cables, the overall depth leaves something to be desired. For a vehicle of this size, you might expect more than the 441 litres provided.

Rear seat passengers will appreciate the spacious feel, thanks to the large glass roof, although the all-dark interior can make it feel a bit gloomy with the roof closed. The back seats are comfortable, and the middle seat is perfectly usable for an adult. There are ample storage solutions, including USB-C ports and heated seat controls for rear passengers. However, the high floor continues to be a compromise, as it reduces under-seat foot space.

Driving Experience

So, how does the 2023 Subaru Solterra drive? In a word: refined. The cabin is well-insulated from road and traffic noise, and the ride is smooth, handling bumps and rough roads with ease. Despite its weight, the Solterra is surprisingly fun to drive, especially on twisty roads. It’s not a sports car by any stretch, but it offers a level of engagement that many EVs lack.

While the official range for the Touring model is just over 250 miles, this could be better considering the price point. The Solterra also has some limitations regarding charging. Despite being capable of 150 kW DC fast charging, it only supports 7 kW charging if you have a standard home wall box. This might be a drawback for some potential buyers.

Off-Road Capability

Part of Subaru’s appeal has always been its off-road capability, and the Solterra doesn't disappoint in this regard. With 210 mm of ground clearance and Subaru's X-Mode, the Solterra is ready for some light off-roading. It's unlikely most buyers will take it far off the beaten path, but it's nice to know that capability is there — especially for those who live in areas with harsh weather or rugged terrain.

Final Thoughts

The 2023 Subaru Solterra EV is a fantastic car to drive with a lot going for it. However, its price point — around £53,000 — places it in direct competition with the likes of the Tesla Model Y Long Range, Skoda Enyaq, and Polestar 2. Each of these offers something different, and while the Solterra is a solid option, it does have its compromises, particularly with interior space and charging capabilities.
