2023 Lexus RX 450h+ PHEV Review

Today, we're diving into the details of the 2023 Lexus RX 450h+ PHEV, the all-new plug-in hybrid variant of Lexus's classic RX model. Lexus claims that 95% of this car is new compared to its predecessor, which means it's practically a ground-up redesign. Let's see what makes this hybrid SUV stand out.

Powertrain and Performance

Under the hood, the RX 450h+ is powered by a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, paired with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT). This setup is mated to an 18.1 kWh battery pack, delivering a combined output of 304 brake horsepower. The RX 450h+ can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds, which is impressive for a vehicle of its size and class.

Exterior and Pricing

We reviewed the Takumi model, finished in Sonic Copper paint — a £250 optional extra. While striking, it's a feature you might choose to skip depending on your taste. The model we tested comes in at £81,000, but keep in mind that the RX range starts from £62,000. Remember, this is the plug-in hybrid model with top-tier trim, which certainly adds to the price.

Interior and Boot Space

Moving to the inside, Lexus has really outdone itself. The boot offers 461 litres of storage, though it feels much larger — my initial guess was around 600 litres! Beyond the generous boot space, you'll find a flat load floor and additional storage for charging cables and other small items. It also features electrically controlled switches to fold down the rear seats and a handy 12-volt socket. Lexus really maximized utility here.

Now, sitting in the back of the RX 450h+ is a luxurious experience. The quality of materials is top-notch, featuring suede inserts and premium finishes throughout. Rear-seat passengers are treated to two USB-C ports, heated and cooled seats, and a 12-volt plug socket. There’s even a cleverly designed cup holder and a usable middle seat thanks to the low transmission tunnel. A panoramic roof adds to the spacious feel, making it a great place for long journeys.

One of the standout features in the back is the electronically reclining rear seats — truly a gift that keeps on giving. And if your front passenger is getting a bit too comfortable, you can adjust their seat from the rear controls. Nice touch, Lexus!

Front Cabin Features

The front cabin carries the same level of luxury, with soft, high-quality materials and a blend of classic and modern design elements, including wood trim and suede door inserts. The Mark Levinson sound system, with its 21 speakers, offers exceptional audio quality, making every drive a pleasure. The clever storage solutions, like the Toyota cubby that opens from both sides, are practical and thoughtful.

A highlight of the front cabin is the 14-inch infotainment system. Although it requires you to accept terms of use every time you start the car (which can get a bit annoying), the system itself is fantastic. Lexus has made major improvements in its infotainment, particularly with Apple CarPlay integration, which is among the best I’ve experienced.

For connectivity, you have a mix of USB-A and USB-C ports and wireless Apple CarPlay. The thoughtful inclusion of multiple USB ports is a lesson other manufacturers could learn from.

Driving Experience

Behind the wheel, the Lexus RX 450h+ maintains its reputation for comfort and refinement. The car typically starts in EV mode, ensuring a quiet startup, and remains hushed on the road with minimal noise intrusion from traffic or tires. However, when you push the engine, you’ll notice it’s a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated unit, especially under hard acceleration. Despite that, the RX is perfect for long cruises and surprisingly agile on winding roads, considering its size and weight of over 2.2 tons.

Lexus’s renowned reliability and build quality make it a strong contender for those looking for a long-term purchase.

Versatility and Fuel Efficiency

The RX 450h+ offers several driving modes, from pure EV to a self-charging hybrid mode that uses the engine as a generator to recharge the battery. This feature can be particularly useful when entering zero-emission zones, allowing you to recharge on the go and switch to EV mode when needed.

As for fuel efficiency, Lexus claims over 200 MPG, but in real-world driving conditions, this is not a realistic figure unless you’re using the EV mode frequently. More realistically, you can expect around 50 MPG when using a combination of petrol and electric power.

Final Thoughts

At £81,000, the Lexus RX 450h+ PHEV is a significant investment, especially with competition from brands like BMW, Jaguar, and Audi offering similar vehicles, sometimes at a lower price point. However, Lexus’s renowned reliability and build quality make it a strong contender for those looking for a long-term purchase. This is a car that will age well, remaining dependable and feeling like new, even after thousands of miles.
