Meet AFEELA 1 : The New Car from Sony & Honda!
The buzz at CES 2025 in Las Vegas is palpable, with the world’s tech innovators unveiling the latest and greatest advancements in technology. Among the most highly anticipated reveals is the AFEELA 1, the long-awaited electric car from the collaboration between Sony and Honda. After years of speculation and anticipation, the concept car has finally made its debut, and it’s sparking plenty of conversation. Here’s what we know so far.
A New Era of Mobility: AFEELA 1
The AFEELA 1 represents the joint effort of two industry giants—Sony, known for its consumer electronics, and Honda, a global leader in automotive engineering. This concept car has been teased for years, but it’s now officially out in the open. So, what can we expect from this electric vehicle?
Design:
The design of the AFEELA 1 has a distinct luxury feel. Upon first glance, it bears similarities to other premium electric vehicles, such as the Lucid Air and Tesla's offerings. The sleek, futuristic body of the AFEELA 1 exudes an understated elegance, but it's not entirely groundbreaking. There are elements that feel familiar, with a subtle mix of Tesla’s minimalism and Lucid's premium look.
One feature that stands out is the large front-facing screen. It’s a space that can host multiple apps, similar to what we've seen in high-end EVs like Tesla. The AFEELA 1 is also equipped with a high-tech "have a nice day" display that offers a personal touch—but while interesting, it feels more like a gimmick than a game-changing feature.
Interior:
Inside, the car continues the trend of large, immersive screens. The top-tier model of the AFEELA 1 offers screens for rear passengers, though these features are limited to the higher-end variants. It’s clear that Sony’s expertise in entertainment and technology has played a significant role here, but the overall design isn’t radically different from what we’re already seeing in the market.
Technology:
What really sets the AFEELA 1 apart is its focus on AI and autonomous driving technology. The car is equipped with 40 cameras and sensors, enabling features like self-parking and potentially more advanced autonomous driving capabilities in the future. This is not surprising, given the collaboration with Sony, which has long been involved in cutting-edge sensor technology. The car also features over-the-air updates, making it future-proof and adaptable as technology evolves.
Additionally, the AFEELA 1 promises an AI-driven experience that will continue to improve over time, thanks to its cloud-connected, modular architecture. Sony and Honda have indicated that you’ll be able to update or replace some parts of the car's electronic system as new technologies emerge. It’s a compelling vision for a car that can evolve beyond its initial specs.
The Numbers: What You’re Paying For
When it comes to pricing, the AFEELA 1 starts at $89,900. This puts it in competition with other high-end electric vehicles, such as the Tesla Model S, which starts at $79,990, and the Lucid Air, which is priced at $79,000. However, those two rivals offer slightly more compelling specs—especially in terms of range and performance—at a lower price point.
Speaking of range, the AFEELA 1 is expected to offer up to 300 miles of range, but this is an estimate and may change as the car moves closer to production. In comparison, the Tesla Model S provides up to 402 miles of range, and the Lucid Air offers up to 520 miles, making the AFEELA 1 seem a bit underwhelming in this category.
Performance and Features:
As for performance, details on acceleration times and top speed are still scarce. The car's manufacturers have kept these figures close to their chest, which makes it hard to gauge how the AFEELA 1 compares to the rapid acceleration we’ve come to expect from electric vehicles like the Tesla Model S Plaid (0-60 mph in under 2 seconds). With its focus on AI, autonomous driving, and high-tech features, the AFEELA 1 seems geared more toward luxury and technology than outright speed.
Additional features include 360-degree sound, recycled materials in the cabin, and a host of futuristic amenities. But again, it’s important to note that many of these features are already available in cars from brands like Tesla and Lucid, so it may not offer the radical new experience that some fans had hoped for.
Global Release and Future Models
The AFEELA 1 will first be available for pre-order in California, with a deposit of $200 securing a spot. The vehicle is expected to hit the market in mid-2026, with a rollout in Japan as well. A more affordable model, the AFEELA Origin, is expected to arrive by 2027, priced at $89,900.
The AFEELA 1 is also expected to benefit from the solid engineering backbone of Honda’s upcoming electric vehicle platform, but early reactions suggest that the Japanese carmakers might be a bit behind when it comes to EV innovation, especially compared to Tesla and newer entrants like Rivian and Lucid.
A Mixed First Impression
After such a long wait, it’s understandable that many are feeling a bit underwhelmed by the AFEELA 1’s debut. While the technology inside promises a future of autonomous driving and AI-powered convenience, the range and performance numbers don’t seem to be anything groundbreaking. With the Tesla Model 3 starting at a significantly lower price point and offering a competitive range and performance, the AFEELA 1 may struggle to stand out in the crowded EV market.
That being said, we’re reserving final judgment. The AFEELA 1 could very well evolve into something special as more details emerge. It’s a beautiful, high-tech car with a lot of potential—but as it stands, it feels more like a latecomer to the EV revolution rather than a leader of it.
Stay tuned for updates as we learn more about the AFEELA 1 and its upcoming models. With Sony and Honda’s combined resources, there’s still hope that this car could surprise us once it hits the streets.
