Hyundai IONIQ 5 Ultimate 73kwh AWD Review

I recently had the chance to get behind the wheel of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 Ultimate, and I have to say, this is one EV that truly lives up to the hype. As part of a Hyundai driving day, I was able to take this beauty for a spin, and my first impressions were strong enough to leave me dreaming of owning one. In this review, I’ll break down exactly why the IONIQ 5 Ultimate is quickly becoming a top contender in the electric vehicle (EV) world.

The retro-modern design is unlike anything else on the road, and in terms of functionality, it’s a strong contender for the best family EV available today.

First Impressions: A Stylish, Spacious SUV with Hatchback Vibes

From the moment I stepped into the Hyundai IONIQ 5 Ultimate, I was struck by the massive amount of space inside. Despite its hatchback-like exterior design, this vehicle feels enormous. The interior space rivals that of larger SUVs, offering generous legroom in both the front and back. For families, this is a huge plus. The boot is flat and spacious, with a wide opening that makes loading and unloading a breeze, even if the depth isn’t the greatest.

High-Tech Interior: Screens, Comfort, and Practicality

This being the Ultimate spec, you get two large screens: one for your driving data and another for infotainment. It’s complemented by a clear head-up display that shows everything from speed limits to sat-nav directions. I really liked the way it reduces the need to look away from the road, making it a much safer drive.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5’s interior layout is both functional and innovative. The center console can slide back, providing more storage and allowing space for larger items like a bag. The steering wheel is another highlight. I’m personally a fan of thicker, more tactile steering wheels, and Hyundai nailed it here. The leather feels high quality, and the wheel just fits perfectly in your hands, providing a comfortable, premium driving experience.

Driving Modes: From Eco to Sport

On the steering wheel, there’s a button that lets you toggle between drive modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. For most daily drives, Eco mode is more than enough. The IONIQ 5 still offers plenty of power even in Eco, while maximizing range. However, Sport mode is where things get interesting. Push the IONIQ 5 Ultimate into Sport, and it feels genuinely exciting, with quick acceleration that doesn’t disappoint, even at higher speeds.

Smooth Ride, Surprisingly Comfortable

One of the big challenges with EVs is that the heavy batteries can sometimes make the ride feel harsh. But Hyundai has done an impressive job with the IONIQ 5’s suspension. It absorbs bumps and imperfections on the road well, offering a smooth, quiet ride. Even when cruising at 50 mph on less-than-perfect roads, the car handles beautifully, making it feel like a proper premium vehicle.

Family-Friendly Features: Space, Safety, and Durability

What really sets the Hyundai IONIQ 5 apart as a family EV is the combination of space and practicality. You can comfortably fit three adults in the back with ease—something not many cars in this class can claim. Without a transmission tunnel, there’s plenty of legroom for everyone.

Hyundai’s decision to use durable materials in the cabin also makes sense for a family vehicle. While it might not have the softest-touch surfaces everywhere, the materials feel built to last, perfect for families with kids who may be less than gentle with their surroundings.

Another excellent feature is the blind-spot view on the dash. The screen automatically shows you a live video feed of your blind spot when you indicate, which adds a great layer of safety to the driving experience.

Verdict: The Ultimate EV Experience?

After spending time with the Hyundai IONIQ 5 Ultimate, it’s clear why this car has won so many awards. It ticks all the boxes: range, performance, practicality, and comfort. The retro-modern design is unlike anything else on the road, and in terms of functionality, it’s a strong contender for the best family EV available today.

Admittedly, it’s not cheap. The IONIQ 5 Ultimate is a premium vehicle, and it feels every bit the part. However, with the right lease deal (which do pop up from time to time), it could be a more affordable option than you might expect.

If I could take one car home from the event, it would be this one. It exceeded my already high expectations, and despite being an EV, it’s simply one of the best cars I’ve ever driven. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 Ultimate is more than just an electric vehicle —it's a game-changer in the world of family cars.
