Highlights of the 2024 Geneva Motor Show
The legendary motor show is back, albeit on a much smaller stage.
The 2024 Geneva Motor Show was like no other that has come before it, taking up only 2 halls of the huge Palexpo venue in Geneva, rather than the whole building (as is the norm). Manufacturers notable by their absence included BMW, Audi, Ford, Volkswagen, Tesla, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda as well as the myriad of Stellantis brands.
Despite the scalled-down nature of the show, its press day still attracted swathes of the world’s leading motoring journalists and media all flock to cover the event.

The undoubted star of the show was the new Renault 5 e-Tech. This really felt like a huge moment for renault and possibly a huge moment for EV acceptance more generally. Whilst some will be dissapointed not to see a petrol turbo variant we must remember that it’s 2024 and manufacturers are now less likely to be so bold. The styling and size of this new Renault 5 just seems to have hit the nail on the head of what is required by many; small, agile, decent range and a fair price (starting from around £25k). The new 5 will go on sale late 2024/early 2025.
BYD Seal U DM-i Hybrid was on display, the first ICE car we’ve seen from BYD to date.
The £110k (est.) Yangwang U8 took pride of place on the BYD stand, this ultra-premium Land Rover Defender rival gained a lot of interest at the show. It certainly makes a big statement - about that brand name though….no.
The undouted star of the show was the new Renault 5 e-Tech
Dacia Spring was here, despite its circa £17k price tag it still asks the consumer to make considerable comprimises and doesn;t look like such a bargain next to a 1 year old Corsa-e for example.
Saic owned MG and IM both made a real splash with an increibly strong display of their more luxurious vehicles such as the MG7, MG9, and the entire IM range. These cars were all very premium with seemingly fantastic build quality. The Germans and Japanese brands need to take a serious look! The new MG3 was launched, this will be the first MG3 to be made available in Europe. The car benefits from a more modern interior and revised looks.
The IM LS6 was just one of the IM cars that deserved all the attention it was getting - very premium!
Lucid Gravity made its European debut having had it’s world premiere at the 2023 LA Auto Show; Lucid also explained that bringing their cars to the UK is 100% on the table (their CEO is Welsh) although LHD nations are currently an easier move for them. A smaller SUV is in the works so that could be a sensible time to launch a RHD car in the UK as small/medium SUVs are so very popular here.
Renault Scenic won Car of the Year 2024, fending off stiff competition from the likes of the BMW i5 , Kia EV9, Peugeot E-3008, and the Volvo EX30 to name just a few.
