Genesis GV70 Electrified (2023) Review

When it comes to luxury electric SUVs, the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is a name you need to know. Often mistaken for a Bentley Bentayga (a comparison I’ll explain shortly), the GV70 Electrified is a true standout in the premium EV market. With impressive performance stats, jaw-dropping interior quality, and a design that feels as bespoke as it is refined, this Genesis SUV is aiming high — and delivering.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is a triumph in design, engineering, and execution. It’s an EV that blends luxury, performance, and practicality with remarkable finesse.

First Impressions: Is That a Bentley?

Every time I get a Genesis, I play a little game: I wait to see how long it takes for someone to ask, “Is that a Bentley?” For the GV70 Electrified, the record is just nine minutes. With its Melbourne Grey matte finish, this SUV oozes elegance and exclusivity. This is no coincidence; a former Bentley designer now works for Genesis, and their influence is undeniable.

At a base price of £64,500, the GV70 comes fully loaded in a single trim level. However, the test model I reviewed included £14,500 worth of options, bringing it to £78,000. Among these extras: a panoramic sunroof, Napa leather Comfort Seats, and a suite of advanced technology that transforms the GV70 into a luxury powerhouse.

Performance and Range: Refined Power Meets Exhilaration

Powered by dual 180 kW motors, the GV70 Electrified delivers 483 bhp in Boost Mode, allowing a 0-62 mph sprint in just 4.2 seconds. The performance is thrilling yet civilized — perfect for both spirited drives and quiet, comfortable cruising.

With a WLTP-rated range of 283 miles, the GV70 Electrified doesn’t lead the class, but it’s respectable. Real-world range is closer to 230 miles, especially with the climate control running. The upside? Rapid charging: Genesis claims 0-80% in just 18 minutes using a 350 kW charger.

Despite its substantial weight (thanks to the battery pack), the GV70 handles remarkably well. The all-wheel-drive system offers excellent grip, and the nicely weighted steering makes every drive a joy. The suspension is expertly tuned, striking a balance between comfort and control, whether you're on tight bends or cruising the motorway.

Interior: A True Standout

Step inside the GV70 Electrified, and you’re immediately enveloped in luxury. Genesis has outdone itself with an interior that rivals — and perhaps surpasses — its German competitors. The fit and finish, the soft-touch materials, and the thoughtful design touches all work together to create a space that feels uniquely special.

Highlights include:

- Napa leather seats that adjust, recline, and even tighten bolsters in Boost Mode for added support.

- A 14.5-inch widescreen infotainment system, complete with touch and rotary controls — intuitive and seamless, even better than BMW’s iDrive.

- Genesis’ blind-spot camera system, which projects a live feed into the driver display.

- Clever storage solutions like a hidden wireless charging pad and cubbies with satisfying, high-quality mechanisms.

Passengers in the rear are equally pampered, with independent climate controls, seat heaters, and ample space. Despite the sloping roofline, the 503-litre boot offers good practicality, augmented by 20 litres of front storage. However, the boot depth is slightly compromised by the battery layout — a minor gripe.

On the Road: Serenity in Motion

Driving the GV70 Electrified is a serene experience. Noise insulation is superb, making it one of the quietest cabins in its class. The ride is cushioned and composed, making long journeys feel effortless. Around town, the SUV feels surprisingly nimble despite its size.

When you’re in the mood for excitement, simply press the Boost button. For 10 seconds, you’ll unleash the car’s full potential, complete with exhilarating acceleration. It’s a fantastic feature for quick overtakes or just reminding yourself of what this luxury EV can do.

Areas for Improvement

As exceptional as the GV70 Electrified is, no car is perfect. Here are a few areas that could be better:

1. Range: While 283 miles isn’t bad, competitors like the Tesla Model Y and BMW iX offer more.

2. Boot design: The parcel shelf sits low, limiting vertical space. A slightly deeper boot would improve practicality.

These are minor nitpicks in what is otherwise a highly polished package.

Final Thoughts: A True Contender

The 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is a triumph in design, engineering, and execution. It’s an EV that blends luxury, performance, and practicality with remarkable finesse. Competitors like the BMW iX3 and Audi e-tron are formidable, but the Genesis stands out with its bespoke feel, outstanding interior, and unbeatable value for money.

If you’re in the market for a luxury EV SUV, the GV70 Electrified deserves a spot at the top of your list. Genesis may not yet have the brand recognition of its German rivals, but with cars like this, it’s only a matter of time.
