2024 MG4 XPower Review

The MG4 made waves when it first hit the UK electric vehicle market, offering a surprisingly competitive alternative to big names like Volkswagen. Fast forward to today, and MG has outdone itself with the 2024 MG4 XPower. This new model is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about EVs, boasting impressive specs that promise a thrilling driving experience.

If you’re in the market for a hot hatch, whether petrol, diesel, or electric, you owe it to yourself to test drive the MG4 XPower.

Electrifying Performance

The 2024 MG4 XPower is all about power and speed. Equipped with a whopping 435 PS and 600 Nm of torque, this hot hatch can rocket from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds. The all-wheel-drive system, upgraded brakes, stiffer suspension, and limited-slip differential on the rear axle ensure that this car handles as well as it accelerates. Whether you’re on a straightaway or tackling twisty backroads, the XPower delivers a driving experience that’s nothing short of exhilarating.

Real-World Range and Practicality

MG claims a WLTP range of 239 miles for the MG4 XPower, but in my real-world testing, I found it closer to 200 miles — still respectable for a car of this performance calibre. Despite the sporty enhancements, the MG4 XPower doesn’t sacrifice practicality. The rear cabin remains spacious enough for passengers, and the boot space holds steady at 363 litres. If you’re curious about the interior and storage details, be sure to check out my full review of the original MG4, which I’ve linked at the end of this post.

Interior: A Mixed Bag

Now, let’s talk about the interior. While the 2024 MG4 XPower does feature part-leather, part-Alcantara seats with red stitching, it feels like MG missed an opportunity to make the cabin feel as sporty as the performance suggests. The materials used are decent but show signs of wear even with just 6,000 miles on the clock — a press car that hasn’t had the easiest life, but still, this is something you wouldn’t expect from a competitor like Toyota.

The infotainment system has seen a few tweaks, including easier-to-use touchscreen controls for the air conditioning. However, Bluetooth connectivity remains a pain point. I struggled to connect my iPhone 14 — a problem I’ve never encountered with any other vehicle, including other MG models. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while available, were also a bit temperamental, which could be a deal-breaker for some tech-savvy drivers.

On the Road: A True Performer

Driving the MG4 XPower is an absolute blast. My initial concern was that the accelerator might act like an on-off switch, but thankfully, it delivers power smoothly, allowing for controlled driving in normal mode. But switch to sport mode, and the XPower really comes to life. The throttle response sharpens, making it easy to dart past traffic or launch off the line.

What’s most surprising about the MG4 XPower is how well it balances daily drivability with high-performance thrills. Even in sport mode, it’s comfortable enough for city driving. But the real fun begins on twisty roads, where the car’s all-wheel-drive system and massive torque make for an engaging, if slightly feisty, driving experience. It’s not without its quirks — torque steer is noticeable, and the car can feel a bit heavy — but that only adds to the hot hatch character.

Charging and Warranty

When it comes to charging, the MG4 XPower is competitive. Using a 150 kW charger, you can go from 10% to 80% in just 35 minutes. And with a class-leading seven-year warranty, MG is setting a new standard for peace of mind in the hot hatch segment.

Final Thoughts

At £36,500, the MG4 XPower offers supercar-like acceleration at a fraction of the price. Sure, the interior could use a bit more refinement, and the connectivity issues are frustrating, but the performance on offer is simply unmatched in this price range. If you’re in the market for a hot hatch, whether petrol, diesel, or electric, you owe it to yourself to test drive the MG4 XPower.

While I might personally lean towards the extended-range version for its 300 miles of range and rear-wheel-drive fun, the XPower is an incredible value for those who crave speed and performance. MG has truly outdone itself, delivering a hot hatch that’s not just fast but also fun and surprisingly practical.
