2023 Cupra Formentor 310PS Review

Today, I'm diving into the 2023 Cupra Formentor VZ2, a car that seamlessly blends the lines between an SUV and a hot hatch. This specific model packs a punch with 310 PS of power, launching from 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds. If you're considering this powerhouse, be prepared to shell out just over £45,000, including a paint option that pushes the price a bit beyond its base of £44,300. However, for those looking for a more budget-friendly option, the V1 version of the Formentor starts at just over £31,000.

Power and Performance Options

What's the difference between the V and VZ variants of the Cupra Formentor, you ask? It’s all about the engine. The V models offer engine options up to 204 PS, particularly if you opt for the hybrid. Meanwhile, the VZ range steps things up with choices between 245 PS and the impressive 310 PS in this version. So, whether you're looking for a more economical ride or something with a bit more bite, there's a Formentor for you.

SUV or Hot Hatch?

Now, let's get to the heart of the debate: Is the Cupra Formentor an SUV, a hot hatch, or something entirely different? Personally, I lean towards calling it a slightly higher-riding hot hatch. It certainly doesn’t feel like a typical SUV when you’re behind the wheel. However, it does borrow some SUV benefits, like a tad more boot space and rear legroom, plus a higher driving position. For those who enjoy hot hatch driving dynamics but want a touch more practicality, this could be the perfect blend.

Exterior and Interior Design

On the outside, I’m a big fan of the Formentor’s styling. Some might think the grey paint looks like primer waiting for a trip to the spray booth, but I think it looks fantastic. And with a boot capacity of 420 litres, it offers more space than a Volkswagen Golf, making it quite practical. Plus, it has a low loading lip that helps keep your groceries from spilling out, and the 60/40 split rear seats with a ski hatch provide added flexibility.

Moving inside, the first thing you'll notice in the back seats is the abundance of foot and legroom—something not all cars these days can boast about. Headroom is ample too, and at 5'9.5", I felt perfectly comfortable. You’ll find two USB-C ports back there, climate controls, and good-quality Nappa leather upholstery. The middle seat is decent for a compact car, though a sizeable transmission tunnel means sharing foot space with the middle passenger.

Front Cabin Comforts

Up front, the Formentor truly shines. The interior materials are top-notch, with a mix of what looks like brushed aluminium but is actually a durable plastic, and a soft, squishy material on the dash with copper stitching. This, combined with the leather-wrapped steering wheel featuring copper accents, gives the cabin a premium feel.

The steering wheel itself is a highlight — familiar to anyone used to VW-Audi group vehicles — with well-placed buttons and paddle shifters. It even features a Cupra drive mode selector and a start/stop button, making it super convenient. The digital driver display is crisp and customizable, easily one of the best I’ve seen.

Infotainment System

The infotainment system is a mixed bag. The wireless Apple CarPlay is a win, providing a lag-free experience with plenty of screen real estate. However, the native infotainment system can be slightly frustrating, particularly with its haptic controls for volume and climate settings. They require a firmer press than expected, which can be annoying. Thankfully, you can control these functions via steering wheel controls or voice commands, which work well.

Driving Experience

One of the standout features of the Cupra Formentor is its customizable driving modes. With the Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), you have nearly 19 different suspension settings, allowing you to fine-tune your driving experience to your exact preferences. In Comfort mode, the car is smooth and relaxed, soaking up bumps with ease. Switch to Sport mode, and the response sharpens. In Cupra mode, it transforms into an aggressive beast, with enhanced engine sounds piped into the cabin, giving it an even more exhilarating feel.

It’s perfect for someone who wants a sporty drive without sacrificing everyday usability.

Final Thoughts

Is the Cupra Formentor 310PS a better choice than the Golf R? In my opinion, they serve different purposes. While the Cupra Leon is more of a direct competitor to the Golf R, the Formentor offers a unique blend of practicality and performance. It’s perfect for someone who wants a sporty drive without sacrificing everyday usability. You can easily take it on a grocery run or hit the track for some weekend fun.
